What is Human Design
Human Design is a comprehensive and integrative system with many layers, it is a synthesis that combines both ancient and modern observational systems of Astrology, the Chinese l Ching, the Hindu – Brahmin Chakras, the Judaic Kabbalah and the contemporary sciences of quantum mechanics, astronomy, genetics and biochemistry.
All designed to help individuals understand their unique personality, soul purpose and life story.
Discovering your Human Design and seeing your chart for the first time can be confusing and overwhelming, it may seem impossible to put together all the pieces when you don’t have a good idea of what the completed puzzle should look like.
This system has many layers so let’s look at the bigger picture of Human Design and what it tells us about ourselves and our world.
Human Design is a synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern science. It is a collection of all the potential archetypes located in a single “map.” That map not only tells you where you would feel good and helps you navigate a path to get there,
Over the course of your life, you’ve been told a story of who you are. Maybe that story led down a career path that isn’t really making your soul soar. Maybe your story has you living out patterns that keep you from believing you can have what you really want in your life. Maybe the story you’ve been trying to keep up with all your life isn’t even really your story.
Human Design will give you the words – the story – of Who You Truly Are.

It can also prepare you for repetitive difficulties that you might encounter throughout your life and embrace the opportunity to grow as you understand your personal Human Design strategy. You’ll discover your path to living an aligned, authentic, vital and truly meaningful life simply by following the guidance set out in your Human Design chart – your “owner’s manual” to your most aligned life.
Human Design is not a belief system – is a logical and practical system that supports us in our decision-making process, connection to our life purpose, and describes accurately who we are and designed to be, it helps us to navigate in this life as our self, and how to use our unique energy to thrive in all areas of life.
If you’re like most of our clients, you’ve probably attended multiple personal growth seminars and read lots of books about manifesting “change” and creating success in your life. Maybe you’ve even studied specific techniques to help you release “blocks” and get yourself “unstuck”. But you still haven’t seen the results you’ve been hoping for. (Even though you’ve been doing everything “right.”) It’s not your fault. The single most important reason you may have not had the success you’ve been working so hard for is this:

Human Design Types
In the Human Design System, each person falls into one of five distinct Types: Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors. These Types are fundamental to understanding your Human Design as they influence your role, strategy, and purpose in life.
Manifestors, are initiators. Making up about 8% of the population, they are the trailblazers who have the unique ability to initiate and make things happen without needing to wait for external cues. Their strategy is to inform others before they act to prevent resistance and maintain peace. The challenge for Manifestors lies in their impact on others; they can unintentionally create waves and disruptions due to their independent and initiating nature.
Generators, on the other hand, are the builders and represent nearly 70% of the population. This type also includes Manifesting Generators, a hybrid that shares characteristics with both Generators and Manifestors. Generators have a defined Sacral center, which gives them a consistent source of life force energy to create and build. Their strategy is to wait for life to come to them and respond, which enables them to engage with opportunities that truly resonate with them and make the best use of their energy.
Projectors, making up about 20% of the population, are the guides. They are naturally insightful, with a gift for understanding and working with systems and people. Their strategy is to wait for recognition and invitation, which ensures they share their wisdom and guidance with those who value and appreciate it. For Projectors, understanding their unique energy dynamics and ensuring they take ample rest is crucial, as they don’t have the consistent energy supply of Generators or Manifesting Generators.
Reflectors, are the rarest Type, comprising just 1% of the population. They are mirrors, reflecting the health and wellbeing of their communities. With all their centers undefined, they are deeply influenced by their environment and the people around them. Their strategy is to wait a full lunar cycle before making major decisions, providing them with time to fully understand and integrate their experiences.
Each Type in Human Design offers unique gifts and perspectives. Understanding your Type can provide profound insights into your life purpose, your relationships, and the best way for you to interact with the world.
Human Design Strategy
Human Design strategies provide an essential guide for how each type can best make decisions and interact with the world. It can offer a roadmap for how to live in alignment with your true nature and find greater ease and fulfilment in life. There are four primary Human Design types, and each has a unique strategy.
For Manifestors, the strategy is to inform others before making a decision or taking action. This doesn’t mean seeking permission or advice, but rather keeping those who will be impacted by their actions in the loop. This strategy helps Manifestors to maintain their independence and autonomy while reducing resistance and potential conflict with others.
Generators and Manifesting Generators share the strategy of waiting to respond. Rather than initiating actions or decisions, they are designed to wait for something in their external environment to respond to. This can be a direct question, an opportunity, or even an internal gut response to something in their surroundings. By waiting to respond, Generators and Manifesting Generators ensure that they’re using their energy in a way that truly fulfils and satisfies them.
Projectors have the strategy of waiting for the invitation. As they are designed to guide and direct others, it’s crucial for them to wait until their insight and guidance is recognized and invited by others. This ensures that they’re sharing their wisdom with those who are ready and willing to receive it, and it can help them to avoid feelings of bitterness that can arise when their guidance is not appreciated.
Finally, Reflectors have the strategy of waiting for a lunar cycle. As they are deeply impacted by the moon and the lunar cycle, Reflectors are advised to give themselves a full 28-day lunar cycle before making major decisions. This allows them to gain perspective and clarity and ensures that they’re making decisions that honor their unique process. By following these strategies, each type can navigate life in a way that aligns with their authentic self, leading to greater satisfaction, success, peace, and surprise, respectively.
Human Design Authority
In Human Design, your Authority is your built-in decision-making strategy. It’s the inner compass that guides you towards the correct choices for you. Understanding and living according to your Authority is a key aspect of aligning with your true self.
The Emotional Authority is found in people who have a defined Solar Plexus Center. This Authority suggests the need for emotional clarity over time before making decisions. These individuals ride an emotional wave and are best served by waiting for the wave to settle before making important choices. This is to ensure that decisions are not clouded by temporary emotional highs or lows.
Sacral Authority is present in Generators and some Manifesting Generators with a defined Sacral Center. Those with this Authority are meant to respond from their gut instincts. Their Sacral Center provides a direct yes or no response in the moment, which can be felt as a gut feeling or bodily sensation. Trusting this gut response is crucial for them.
Projectors, and some Manifesting Generators and Reflectors, can have what is called a Splenic Authority. Individuals with this Authority are guided by their Splenic Center, the center of intuition and instinct. This intuitive sense often communicates through quiet whispers or instant knowing, which are best followed in the moment as they can be fleeting.
The Self-Projected Authority is found in a small percentage of Projectors. These individuals are guided by their G Center, or Identity Center. They are meant to talk things out and listen to their own voice to reach clarity. Their own words guide them to the correct action or decision.
The Ego Manifested Authority is unique to a small number of Manifestors, who have a defined Heart Center. They are meant to speak from their willpower and desires. Similarly, some Projectors and Manifesting Generators may have a Ego-Projected Authority, meaning they should wait for invitations or opportunities to present themselves and then express their needs and desires clearly.
In short, living according to your Authority in Human Design brings you into alignment with your true self and supports optimal decision-making. It’s a process of learning to trust your inner guidance system, which leads to greater authenticity and fulfilment.

Human Design Definition
The Human Design System refers to “Definition” as the way in which the gates and centres of a person’s Human Design chart, or BodyGraph, are connected. (The white areas of the chart are undefined and the coloured in parts of the chart are undefined.) These connections are represented as channels, and the nature of the connections provide key insights into a person’s inherent nature, including their talents, strengths, challenges, and behavioural patterns.
The channels in a Human Design chart connect two centers and are activated by the gates present in a person’s design. Each channel carries specific energy and represents a particular life theme or lesson. Where the Definition exists, a person has a consistent and reliable way of operating that doesn’t change over time. It is the part of us that is fixed and dependable, and it can often be a source of strength.
A person’s Definition can be classified into four types: Single Definition, Split Definition, Triple Split Definition, and Quadruple Split Definition. Single Definition individuals have all their defined centers connected, suggesting a potential for self-sufficiency. Split Definitions have areas of Definition separated by areas of non-definition, indicating that they might often seek connection or understanding through others. Triple Split and Quadruple Split Definitions have even more areas of separation, leading to complex inner dynamics and interactions with others.
An individual’s Definition also influences their relationships. In relationships, the areas where one person’s Definition connects with another’s open centers can lead to a sense of attraction, as well as potential areas of learning or conflict. Furthermore, where Definitions do not meet, a phenomenon called a “bridging gate” can occur. This gate might be unconsciously sought after in others, shaping a person’s relational patterns.
In summary, Definition in Human Design is a vital concept that offers profound insights into an individual’s consistent nature and relational dynamics. By understanding our Definition and that of others, we can better navigate our interactions, foster self-acceptance, and appreciate the unique wiring that each person brings to the world.
Human Design Profiles
In Human Design, the Profile adds another layer of depth to our understanding of ourselves. There are 12 profiles in total, each with a unique combination of numbers ranging from 1 to 6. These numbers correspond to the lines of the I Ching, an ancient Chinese text, and they provide insight into how we interact with the world and our life’s purpose.
The first number in a Profile is the ‘Personality’ or ‘Sun’ number. It represents our conscious characteristics – the traits that we are aware of in ourselves. The second number is the ‘Design’ or ‘Earth’ number, indicating our unconscious characteristics, the traits that others may notice in us before we notice them in ourselves.
Take, for example, the 1/3 Profile, also known as the Investigator/Martyr. The number 1 represents the Investigator, a person who seeks a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding. They tend to be introspective, always digging deeper to understand the world and themselves. The number 3 represents the Martyr, an experiential learner who gains wisdom through trial and error. Together, these qualities create an individual who is continually exploring and learning from their experiences.
Another example is the 4/6 Profile, or the Opportunist/Role Model. The number 4 represents the Opportunist, who excels in networking and building close relationships. They often find opportunities coming to them through their social interactions. The number 6 represents the Role Model, a three-part life process that includes a period of trial and error, a time of retreat and observation, and ultimately, becoming a role model based on the wisdom they’ve gathered. As a whole, these individuals may spend the first part of their life making mistakes and learning from them, then retreat, observe, and ultimately emerge as a role model for others.
Lastly, consider the 6/2 Profile, the Role Model/Hermit. The number 6, as previously described, represents the Role Model, while the number 2 represents the Hermit, who needs alone time to be productive and tends to have talents that come naturally. This combination creates individuals who alternate between needing solitude to refine their skills and emerging as role models who lead by example.
Understanding your Profile in Human Design can offer a clearer perspective on your strengths, challenges, and overall life path. It adds a layer of depth to your Type and can help you navigate life more authentically and effectively.
Human Design Centers
In Human Design, Centers are key components of the BodyGraph and represent different aspects of human consciousness and bodily functions. There are nine Centers in total, each with its unique attributes and qualities. When you look at a BodyGraph, the Centers are the geometric shapes you see, and they can either be defined (colored in) or undefined (white).
The Head Center, located at the top of the BodyGraph, represents inspiration and mental pressure to resolve questions or doubts. It’s where we process doubts, confusion, and inspiration. If this center is defined, it indicates a consistent way of thinking and questioning. When it’s undefined, thoughts and inspirations might be more influenced by others or the environment.
Below the Head Center is the Ajna Center, representing the mind and analytical processes. This is where concepts and beliefs are held and where you analyze information. If your Ajna Center is defined, you likely have a consistent way of processing information and making decisions. An undefined Ajna can lead to a more flexible and adaptable mindset, but also potentially more uncertainty in decision-making.
The Throat Center is about communication and expression. It’s the center for manifestation and is closely related to action. When defined, there’s a consistent way of communicating or taking action. When undefined, communication and action might be more inconsistent or influenced by the situation or other people.
The G Center, also known as the Identity Center, is about direction, love, and identity. This center helps guide us on our life journey. With a defined G Center, there tends to be a fixed sense of self and direction in life. An undefined G Center could lead to more flexibility in personal identity, but also potentially a lack of consistent direction.
The Heart Center, also known as the Ego Center, is about willpower, value, and worth. If defined, you may have a reliable access to willpower and a consistent sense of self-worth. If it’s undefined, self-esteem and willpower might be more inconsistent or affected by external influences.
Understanding the definitions or lack thereof in your Centers is a vital part of Human Design, as it provides a deeper insight into your energy dynamics and how you interact with the world. Remember, there is no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ when it comes to having defined or undefined centres; they simply provide different experiences and ways of interacting with the world.

Human Design Incarnation Cross
This is the combination of your conscious and unconscious Sun and Earth positions in your chart. It represents your life purpose and the overarching theme of your life journey. By understanding your Incarnation Cross, you can gain insight into your true purpose and align your actions with your innate gifts.
Human Design Signature
In Human Design, each of the four types is associated with a specific signature – an indicator of whether or not an individual is living true to their design. These signatures provide a measure of whether someone is on track, living their strategy and authority, and expressing their true nature. It’s like a barometer for self-understanding and alignment, serving as a compass in the journey of self-discovery and personal growth.
For Manifestors, the signature is peace. When Manifestors are living according to their design – initiating and informing others of their actions – they find themselves in a state of peace. They are free from resistance, have a sense of autonomy, and they do not feel the need to control everything. Peace becomes a natural byproduct of their right actions and decisions.
Generators and Manifesting Generators share the signature of satisfaction. When they are using their Sacral energy correctly – responding rather than initiating – they experience a deep sense of satisfaction. They feel fulfilled, productive, and energized by their work and activities. Their lives are filled with tasks and experiences that they love and that truly light them up.
The signature for Projectors is success. When they are recognized and invited to share their wisdom and insights, Projectors feel successful. They have a sense of being valued for who they are and what they bring to the table. Their wisdom is appreciated, their efforts are recognized, and they find their rightful place in the world.
Reflectors, the rarest type in Human Design, have the signature of surprise. When they are honouring their unique rhythm and cycle and giving themselves the time they need to make decisions, Reflectors experience the wonder of surprise. They have a profound connection with the world around them and can be delighted and surprised by life’s unfolding.
In sum, the signature of each type in Human Design is a key to understanding whether or not one is living according to their true nature. It’s a helpful tool for self-awareness and personal growth.
Human Design Not-Self Theme
In the Human Design System, the Not-Self theme is a crucial concept that highlights the conditioned aspects of our personalities and behaviours. These are the areas where we may have drifted from our true nature due to external influences, societal pressures, or personal experiences. The Not-Self theme is often seen as a guide or signal pointing us towards areas in our life where we might not be living authentically or in alignment with our true design.
Each Human Design Type (Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, and Reflector) has a specific Not-Self theme associated with it. For Manifestors, it’s anger; for Generators and Manifesting Generators, it’s frustration; for Projectors, it’s bitterness; and for Reflectors, it’s disappointment. These emotional states can serve as indicators that the individual is not operating correctly according to their Type’s strategy and authority.
The Not-Self theme is closely tied to the concept of open and undefined Centers in the Human Design BodyGraph. Open Centers are aspects of ourselves that are most susceptible to conditioning from the external environment. Undefined Centers absorb and amplify energy from others and the world around us. Over time, this conditioning can lead us to behave in ways that are not aligned with our true self, further pushing us into our Not-Self theme.
Recognizing our Not-Self theme can be a significant step towards deconditioning and returning to our true self. It requires self-awareness and observation, noticing when these emotional states arise, and then tracing them back to situations or decisions that are not in alignment with our Type’s strategy and authority. Over time, awareness and understanding of our Not-Self theme can serve as a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation.
In conclusion, the Not-Self theme in Human Design is not meant to be a judgement or a flaw to be fixed, but rather a guiding mechanism that helps us identify when we’re living out of alignment with our true design. By understanding and working with our Not-Self theme, we can navigate our life with more authenticity, making decisions that honour who we truly are, leading to a life of more satisfaction, success, peace, or surprise, depending on our Type.
Human Design Digestion
In the realm of Human Design, Digestion is not merely about the physical act of eating and digesting food; it also includes how you ‘digest’ life experiences and information. The system categorizes Digestion into six tonalities: Alternating, Closed, Cold, Nervous, Low, and InDirect. Similarly, there are six opposite tonalities: Consecutive, Open, Hot, Calm, High, and Direct. These tonalities represent the different ways in which people take in, process, and respond to life experiences.
The Alternating tonality suggests a need for variety, both in diet and in life experiences. These individuals thrive when they can switch between different foods, activities, or environments regularly. The opposite tonality, Consecutive, implies a preference for consistency and routine. Consecutive individuals thrive on regularity and find comfort in predictability.
The Closed tonality indicates individuals who process information or experiences best when in their own space or when focusing on one thing at a time. On the contrary, those with the Open tonality need interaction with others or multi-tasking to process effectively. The Cold tonality denotes people who respond well to cooler environments, foods, and calming experiences, while the Hot tonality signifies individuals who prefer warm environments, foods, and stimulating experiences.
The Nervous tonality represents individuals who process and ‘digest’ quickly, often leading to a higher energy and activity level. In contrast, those with the Calm tonality process more slowly, leading to a more relaxed and measured approach to life. The Low tonality suggests a preference for softer tones and quiet environments, while those with the High tonality are stimulated by louder sounds and vibrant surroundings.
Lastly, the InDirect tonality implies that individuals digest experiences and information best when they are not the focus, allowing for a more passive or indirect approach to life. On the other hand, those with the Direct tonality are energized when they’re actively engaged or in the spotlight. Understanding your Digestion in Human Design can guide you towards a lifestyle that best aligns with your nature, from the food you eat to the environment you thrive in.
Human Design Sense
The Human Design system acknowledges that individuals perceive their environment and make sense of the world in different ways, resulting in a unique experiential reality. It identifies six Design Senses that influence our perception, interpretation, and interaction with the world around us.
The first sense, Smell, is not just about our physical ability to detect scents. In a broader sense, it involves the recognition of underlying patterns and energy signatures, akin to “smelling” a situation or person. This sense can guide individuals toward or away from particular environments or experiences based on the subtle “scents” they pick up.
Taste is another Design Sense that extends beyond our physical ability to discern different flavors. In the context of Human Design, Taste refers to our discernment and preference for certain kinds of experiences, people, or environments. This sense can guide us towards what is correct for us and help us “savor” life’s experiences more fully.
Outer Vision represents our capacity to see the bigger picture. Individuals with this sense have a knack for viewing situations from a broad perspective, seeing patterns, trends, and larger contexts. They are often able to discern the best path forward by taking a comprehensive view of the situation.
On the other hand, Inner Vision refers to an individual’s inner awareness or intuition. This Design Sense involves an internal seeing, such as visualizing, imagining, or dreaming. Those with a keen Inner Vision often have strong intuitive insights or visions about the future or hidden aspects of situations.
Feeling refers to an individual’s sensitivity to the emotional climate or the ‘feel’ of situations or environments. People with a strong Feeling sense often have a heightened awareness of others’ emotions and the emotional undertones in an environment. They might make decisions based on their “gut feelings” or the emotional “vibes” they get.
Lastly, the sense of Touch is related to our tangible interaction with the world. This involves physical touch but also refers to the sense of connection and impact we have with others and the environment. Individuals with a strong sense of Touch might be highly affected by the physical and energetic ‘touch’ of their environments or interactions.
In Human Design, understanding your Design Senses can provide profound insights into how you best interact with the world, absorb information, and make decisions. This self-knowledge can guide you towards living in a way that is more aligned with your authentic self.
Human Design Motivation
In the Human Design System, the Motivation aspect helps explain the underlying drive or ‘why’ behind your actions and behaviours. The system suggests six types of Motivation: Fear, Hope, Desire, Need, Guilt, and Innocence. Each person carries one of these as their primary motivating force, which steers their direction and choices throughout life.
The first motivation, Fear, doesn’t denote living in a constant state of terror. Rather, it signifies being motivated by the need to understand, overcome, and break down fears. Those with Fear as their Motivation may often find themselves driven to push boundaries and explore new territories. Similarly, Hope as a motivation isn’t merely about optimism; individuals with this Motivation are driven by the potential for improvement and a better future.
Desire and Need Motivations are deeply connected to yearning and necessity, respectively. Those with Desire Motivation are driven by their wants and ambitions, while those with a Need Motivation are compelled by essential needs and basic necessities. Individuals with Guilt Motivation, instead of feeling perpetually guilty, are motivated by responsibilities and obligations, and Innocence Motivation often seeks simplicity and authenticity.
Understanding your Motivation in Human Design provides insight into what truly drives you. It’s like an internal compass that guides your decisions and actions. By becoming aware of your Motivation, you can bring more clarity and authenticity into your life. However, like any other component of Human Design, it’s not about strict definitions or limitations. Instead, it’s a tool for self-discovery and growth, helping you to align more closely with your unique nature and design.
Human Design Perspective
The Perspectives in Human Design provide a framework for understanding how we perceive the world and our place within it. These perspectives can influence our decision-making process, interaction with others, and overall life journey. The six perspectives you mentioned each illuminate a unique viewpoint and approach to life.
The Survival perspective relates to an individual’s basic instinct for survival and self-preservation. Those with this perspective tend to view the world through the lens of their own needs and safety. They may focus on meeting basic necessities like food, shelter, and security. This perspective often leads to practical, cautious decisions, and an inherent ability to withstand adversity.
The Possibility perspective involves seeing the world in terms of potential and opportunities. Individuals with this perspective are often optimistic and forward-thinking, always considering what could be. They may excel at brainstorming, innovating, and dreaming big, often inspiring others with their enthusiasm and expansive thinking. They often view life as a series of opportunities to explore and are comfortable with the uncertainty that comes with this.
Those with the Power perspective see the world through the lens of influence and authority. They are often driven by a desire to lead, influence, and make an impact on the world. They may be natural leaders, often exhibiting confidence and charisma that draws others to them. This perspective can lead to decisions focused on gaining and maintaining power, and these individuals often have a significant impact on their surroundings.
The Wanting perspective pertains to desire, aspiration, and ambition. Individuals with this perspective are often motivated by their wants, whether they’re personal goals, material possessions, or ideal relationships. They may spend a great deal of time envisioning their desires and crafting plans to achieve them. Their decisions are often rooted in their aspirations, and they can be highly driven to fulfil their wants.
The Probability perspective is characterized by a practical, analytical approach to life. Those with this perspective tend to assess the likely outcomes before making decisions. They might excel in strategic planning or risk assessment, and they often bring a valuable dose of realism to projects and plans. They are typically realistic and pragmatic, often predicting outcomes based on past experiences and observable patterns.
Finally, the Personal perspective is centered on individualism and personal identity. Individuals with this perspective tend to value their unique experiences, values, and viewpoints. They may place high importance on personal authenticity and self-expression. Decisions for these individuals often stem from a deep sense of personal truth and a desire to remain true to themselves.
These perspectives are not mutually exclusive, and individuals can encompass elements of multiple perspectives. By understanding these perspectives within the context of Human Design, we can gain deeper insights into ourselves and others, enhancing empathy, understanding, and communication.
Human Design Environment
In Human Design, your environment plays a significant role in how you interact with the world and how you feel within it. Recognizing and aligning with the correct environment for you can lead to better decision-making, improved well-being, and a greater sense of comfort and ease in life. According to Human Design, there are six types of environments that can impact a person: Markets, Kitchens, Caves, Valleys, Mountains, and Shores.
The Markets environment refers to bustling, active spaces filled with people and activities, often suited to those who thrive in busy, social environments where exchange and interaction are constant. The Kitchens environment is ideal for those who find nourishment and creativity in domestic settings or places where transformation occurs, be it in the literal kitchen, workshops, or studios.
The Cave environment is for those who require personal space and seclusion for their well-being. These individuals often need a private, defined space where they can retreat and recharge. Valleys represent environments that are sheltered and supportive, often with a strong sense of community. People suited to Valleys often enjoy being nestled within supportive communities or families.
The Mountain environment is for those who need a broad view or perspective. They are often comfortable in elevated or high places, where they can observe from a distance. Lastly, the Shores environment refers to places where two things meet, such as the edge of a forest or the coastline where the land meets the sea. Individuals suited to this environment often enjoy the dynamic and ever-changing nature of these locations.
Identifying your specific environment type in Human Design can provide insightful guidance, helping you to optimize your living or working spaces and understand what conditions can lead to a more comfortable and productive life. Human Design Gates
In the Human Design system, the Gates are a fundamental aspect of understanding an individual’s unique design. They are based on the 64 hexagrams of the I-Ching and are found within the nine centres of the Bodygraph, where they serve as specific thematic expressions of the energy flow within the centres.
Each of the 64 Gates carries a specific quality or theme of energy, which can be understood as a potential talent, challenge, or theme in a person’s life. The number, location, and connection of these Gates in an individual’s Human Design chart can indicate distinct personality traits, potentials, and life paths. Each Gate also has a corresponding “line” that further refines its energy, providing even more specificity.
For instance, a person with the Gate of Initiation (Gate 3) in their design might naturally embrace change and be inclined towards innovation. In contrast, someone with the Gate of Peace (Gate 58) might be driven by a desire for harmony and improvement in their environment.
Gates become activated when connected to another Gate through a channel, forming a defined center. This connection signifies that the energy between those Gates is consistent and reliable in the person’s design. If a Gate does not connect to form a channel, it’s considered an “open” or “hanging” gate, and it may express in less consistent or predictable ways, depending on the individual’s environment and conditioning.
It’s important to remember that while understanding Gates can provide valuable insights into an individual’s potential and tendencies, they are only one piece of the larger Human Design puzzle. It is the synthesis of all elements in the Body graph – including the Gates, Centers, Channels, Profile, Type, and more – that forms a comprehensive picture of an individual’s Human Design.
Human Design Channels
In the Human Design system, Channels are integral components of the BodyGraph, the visual representation of one’s unique design. Channels connect two Gates, located within the Centers of the BodyGraph, and define the energy flow between them. There are 64 Gates and 36 Channels in total, each carrying its own distinct energy and theme.
Channels play a significant role in determining an individual’s Type and Authority, two foundational elements in Human Design. When a Channel is fully activated – meaning that both of its Gates are defined in an individual’s design – it establishes a consistent and reliable energy flow between the two Centers it connects. This connection “defines” the Centers and influences the person’s way of processing and engaging with various aspects of life.
Each of the 36 Channels carries a distinct archetype or theme that reveals specific characteristics, talents, and life themes of an individual. For instance, the Channel of Recognition (Channel 20-10) is about the recognition of values and the drive to act upon what one values. The Channel of The Beat (Channel 9-52) is related to concentration, focus, and the ability to process details.
The presence of a specific Channel in an individual’s design does not inherently denote “good” or “bad” attributes; rather, it symbolizes certain tendencies, traits, or themes that may play out in their life. These can serve as potential areas of personal growth, challenges to overcome, or inherent strengths to lean into.
Ultimately, understanding Channels in Human Design offers a path toward self-discovery and a means to navigate life more authentically. It helps individuals grasp how they are energetically wired to interact with the world, giving them a clearer perspective of their inherent strengths and potential challenges. It’s important to note, however, that the Channels are only one aspect of the Human Design system and are best understood in the context of the entire BodyGraph, including Gates, Centers, Type, Authority, and Profile.
